WASTE DESIGN

Use of innovative green technologies for municipal waste collection and promotion of recycling culture
Priority Axis 3

Protecting and promoting natural and cultural resources

Specific Objective:
OS 3.3.
Investment Priority:
PI 6f
Typology:
Standard
Overall Objective of the Project:

The project aims to rationalize the collection of municipal solid waste, reducing it through the use of green technologies and to decrease the production of unsorted waste through an action of public awareness-raising on the issues of circular economy.

Project summary:

The project addresses the common challenge of promoting innovative green technologies to improve environmental safeguard and the efficient use of resources in the waste sector. The general objective is to promote the circular economy through rationalization of urban waste collection, reduction of unsorted waste, as well as stakeholders’ (companies / operators in the sector and citizens) awareness raising.
Main outputs:

1) a digitized pilot-system aimed at monitoring the filling percentage of different types of bins;

2) 6 pilot-actions on the use of intelligent underground or basement bins. A cross-border approach is needed to identify and test two innovative technologies in the territories of the municipalities involved, which share the same urban structure and similar criticalities: coastal municipalities and small historic centers. The results of the pilot studies will then be promoted to all those involved in waste collection. The project fosters the cross-border exchange of know-how and through demonstration to the public it will tackle the tangible value of recycled waste as prototypes of urban furniture will be made out from recycled material.

Main results:

Result 1: Optimized innovation in the management of urban waste through the implementation of an experimental activity in the pilot-territory. In particular, this result will be obtained through a system to monitor the filling percentage of the different types of road bins for waste collection and transmission of the data collected for their registration/processing through a software. Data of the individual bins and their geolocation through GPS systems shall allow optimal management of the collection and in the long term the optimization of: the routes of the vehicles used for emptying the bins (reducing distances and emissions as well as fuel and acoustic impact); the distribution of bins on the territory; the impact of the waste collection islands on andscape (with direct consequences on tourist attractiveness); the use of human and instrumental resources.
Result 2: Long-term reduction of the portion of undifferentiated solid urban waste thanks to the awareness campaign focused on the creation of some prototypes of street furniture, according to the principles of wastedesign according which the use of recycled material will help conveying the concept of circular economy.
