Preserving and protecting the environment and promoting resource efficiency.
Protecting and promoting natural and cultural resources
To maintain, explore and promote the material and immaterial heritage of extraordinary historical significance of WW1 as a shared heritage of the programme area within the main brand of the special destination of the Peace Trail between the Alps and the Adriatic. To encourage the integration, updating and development of a new sustainable and culturally oriented tourist offer, based on engaging presentations of the WW1 heritage and thematic routes.
The peculiarity of the programme area is the presence of WW1 heritage, of extraordinary historical significance, sometimes poorly preserved, with untapped potential for tourism development. The project will contribute to transforming the current situation through shared cross-border activities aimed at the long-term conservation of WW1 heritage and increasing its use in view of the development of sustainable cultural tourism. Studies, exhibitions, cultural and commemorative events will be carried out to strengthen the general knowledge and awareness of WW1 heritage. Targeted training and networking activities for tour operators, organisations and other stakeholders will be carried out to encourage the development of the new tourism offer. To strengthen the joint promotion and marketing of WW1 heritage, a main Peace Trail brand with marketing guidelines, a website and other dissemination material will be introduced. New thematic routes, info-points and centres with interactive and innovative heritage presentations will be updated and organised. Small scale investments will be aimed at preserving WW1's extraordinarily valuable heritage.
The main results of the project are: - studies on the cross-border heritage of the First World War and presentations of selected results; - targeted training and networking to promote the tourism valorisation of the heritage of the WW1 for tourism providers, organisations and other stakeholders; - new exhibitions on the heritage of the WW1 and thematic cultural, commemorative events and conferences; - a new cross-border umbrella destination brand for the Paths of Peace between the Alps and the Adriatic, with a brandbook and guidelines for the joint marketing of the heritage of the WW1. Management guidelines for the Bovec-Trst route; - Initiatives for the development of new tourist services and offers; - A common destination website for the Routes of Peace and materials for the promotion of the WW1 heritage; - Renovated and newly designed and signposted thematic routes and info points; - Upgraded and new information centres with modern ICT and multimedia presentations of such heritage; - Renovated buildings, museums, monuments, etc. of WW1 heritage of outstanding importance in the programme area.
Cross-border cooperation in achieving the above results has: (1) preserved the World War I heritage of outstanding importance; (2) produced an attractive interpretation and presentation of the World War I heritage; (3) greatly enhanced the visibility and promotion of the common heritage in the framework of the cross-border brand and destination of the Routes of Peace; (5) promoted the strengthening and development of the cross-border tourism offer in the framework of the integral product of the Routes of Peace. This has increased (a) the level of cross-border integration in the field of sustainable appreciation of the World War I heritage and (b) the number of expected visitors across the programme area, thus directly contributing to the programme result indicator of specific objective 3.1 as well as to the impact indicators of PN 6C (C009 and 3.1.1).

1. To consolidate the knowledge and awareness of a common heritage of the First World War in the PA through the preparation and organisation of cross-border billing and research programmes.
With the implementation of the study activities we will complete the knowledge relating to the heritage of the First World War; the results will be used to organize training and promotional activities. We will organise educational, cultural and commemorative events, conferences, exhibitions and publications aimed at raising awareness, recognition and knowledge of the First World War heritage, including among important target groups (e.g. journalists, tourist agencies). Through networking and training for current and potential interested tour operators, we will encourage the development of a new tourism offer. In this way, we will increase the number of visitors expected and contribute to the implementation of the result indicator C009 PO.
2. Stimulate the development of sustainable cultural tourism by creating a destination and the Peace Trail brand, along with tourism promotion tools.
We will draw up guidelines for the management of the Cross-border Peace Trail between Bovec and Trieste with long-term actions for the maintenance of the trail and of particularly important artefacts. We will draw up the guidelines for marketing WW1 heritage, including a new Peace Trail brand for the relevant area of the trail as well as for some "hot spots" of particular historical significance for the whole PA. For promotional purposes we will prepare a new shared website, modern ICT tools and other promotional material. To support marketing, we will promote the development of new support services. The activities will increase the number of potential visitors and contribute to the result indicator C009 PO.
3. Create a network of historical paths and info-points within the Peace Trail brand, by restoring and laying out the paths, info-points and monuments of particular historical importance.
By carrying out numerous restoration and extension activities on WW1 footpaths, museums and other heritage, as well as by creating new info-points and centres, we will ensure the preservation of a heritage of exceptional historical value and at the same time boost its tourism potential. We will renovate existing paths and open up new ones by positioning information signs and tourism infrastructures. We will restore particularly significant First World War monuments and museums. We will create new information points and innovative presentation centres for WW1 heritage. In this way we will contribute to the result indicator 3.1.1 PO: no. of investments/services for the conservation/restoration of cultural heritage.
