Eco- Smart: May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity

News

The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. When first created by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly in late 1993, 29 December (the date of entry into force of the Convention of Biological Diversity), was designated The International Day for Biological Diversity. In December 2000, the UN General Assembly adopted 22 May as IDB, to commemorate the adoption of the text of the Convention on 22 May 1992 by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity. This was partly done because it was difficult for many countries to plan and carry out suitable celebrations for the date of 29 December, given the number of holidays that coincide around that time of year.

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity is pleased to announce the Biodiversity Day 2021 slogan: “We’re part of the solution”. The slogan was chosen to be a continuation of the momentum generated last year under the over-arching theme, “Our solutions are in nature”, which served as a reminder that biodiversity remains the answer to several sustainable development challenges. From nature-based solutions to climate, health issues, food and water security, and sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity is the foundation upon which we can build back better.

Within the framework of the ECO-SMART project (Interreg V-A Cooperation Programme Italy-Slovenia 2014-2020), by raising awareness and setting up a system for monitoring the effects of climate change on ecosystem services, we are committed to contributing to conservation of Natura 2000 sites. Within the framework of the project, we are also developing proposals for sustainable solutions for adaptation to climate change based on an ecosystem approach. Ecosystems provide everything that is necessary for people to survive, i.e. drinking water and food, regulating the climate and water regime, preserving the landscape, etc., all that we call ecosystem services.

Biodiversity, which plays a key role in the provision of ecosystem services, is a necessary and indispensable asset that must be preserved, as highlighted by 21 May – European Nature Day 2000 and the European Parks Day – 24 May.
