Crossit Safer Study of Fire Risk

THE STUDY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PADOVA – PART ONE

Fires are the main cause that jeopardize forests in the Mediterranean area and they are particularly dangerous when they can involve urban areas or campsites.

One of the activities of the Crossit Safer project is the improvement of the methodology for estimating wildfire risk which will be realized through development of models for estimation of risk scenarios and vulnerability in urban agglomerations and both civil and industrial infrastructures. The activity is being evolved by project partner №7 – the University of Padova.

On 22 June 2020 a minor meeting of two project partners took place for the first time after the closure of borders between Italy and Slovenia. For the purposes of a field study Mr Flavio Taccaliti of the University of Padova visited partner №2 of the Crossit safer project, the Municipality of Ajdovščina. The visit took place within a study evolved by the TESAF department (a unit for environment and agro-forestry systems), the aim of which is examining a typical natural environment. The results of the study will be used for the creation of simulation software regarding fires.

The University of Padova has selected a few typical local points in the field of some project partners where the fire risk will be examined.

The representatives of the two project partners visited three forest zones in the territory of the Municipality of Ajdovščina. First they stopped in the roadside forest area above Ajdovščina just under the plateau of Zagriža, the road took them then into the agglomeration of Koboli in the village of Planina, where the representative of local civil protection Mr Matevž Brataševec introduced the attractiveness of the territory, while the last stop was the agglomeration of Slejki in the village of Tabor nad Črničami. The visit ended in the pleasant freshness of Smrekova Draga at 1500 meters where Mr Brataševec explained the variety of local forests to the visitors.

The locations have to be examined a few times so the visit will be followed by a new one, about which we will inform you.
