A 3D RECONSTRUCTION WILL BRING THE CASTLE ON KOZLOV ROB ABOVE TOLMIN BACK TO LIFE (MERLINCV)

News

As a project partner in MerlinCV project, the Municipality of Tolmin decided to arrange for a 3D reconstruction of the castle at Kozlov rob as it looked in 16th century at one of its peaks. The Municipality chose Arctur company for this project, primarily for its vast experience in the field of computer processing of cultural heritage. The expert work started with precise measurements of the existing castle ruins with the help of drones which captured the ruins as a point cloud. Geodetic measurements were used for the castle floor plan. Historical archives were studiesd with the support of Tolmin Museum experts, and later on, all available information was used in Unreal Engine environment to digitally reconstruct the walls and other key elements of the castle. Simultaneously with the reconstruction attempt, several 360-degree photos of the site were taken. 3D reconstruction attempts were integrated into the images. An on-line application is being developed which will allow visitors to use their smart phones to view hypothetical image of the castle on location in 360-degree mode.

The castle ruins at Kozlov rob are a popular hiking destination among locals and tourists. The new technology will provide visitors with the chance to experience the location and imagine the castle in a vivid way making their visit even more exciting. Well documented historical archives and new reconstructions of how the castle looked, are bringing even more options: a presentation of the 3D castle reconstruction in virtual reality (VR) with VR glasses in the form of a virtual ascent to this hill overlooking Tolmin. The Municipality of Tolmin will tackle this challenge in 2022 within the framework of MerlinCV project. It will be a major achievement in the field of digital presentation of cultural heritage, made possible thanks to MerlinCV project. The castle overlooking Tolmin will come to life again with the help of modern technology.
