Project event – MEDS GARDEN: Opening ceremony "Boršt" garden 25.10.2018

The Mediterranean garden next to the old school in Boršt opened its doors on October 25, 2018. This garden functions as a learning didactic center for preserving and promoting traditional vegetation and cuisine of the northern Adriatic, and at the same time, represents a new place for socializing and meeting for the locals.

The garden spreads over 500 square meters of land, where it is possible to admire 182 different perennials and 14 annuals, which will be planted in the spring. You can also admire a well, which is a very typical element of Mediterranean gardens and courtyards. It is divided into several thematic beds: in the first bed, surrounded by stone blocks from the Istrian stone, called the honey beam, there are various herbs and plants, such as lavender, coreopsis,
echinacea, sage, followed by a decorative bed with cypresses, asters and pittosporum and fruit beams with aronia, rosemary, currant and gooseberries. In the garden, you can also find decorative or useful beds with herbs and vegetable gardens in which artichokes, tarragon, strawberries and asparagus are planted, as well as fruit garden with cherry, Chinese date, pomegranate and sorb tree.

The garden was set up by the Koper Municipality together with six partners, within the framework of the project, Indigenous Mediterranean Garden and Culinary for Preserving the Typical Identity of the Region - MEDS Garden, under whose patronage are two already opened gardens in neighboring Italy, namely Orto del Brenta near Venice and Friul near Pordenone . In all of the gardens, in the following years, a number of activities will be carried out, from guided tours, workshops and courses for announced groups, while those at Purissima will also offer cooking classes in the learning kitchen, where they will occasionally also host culinary Istrian evenings.
