WASTE DESIGN - Underground waste collection facility in Izola

News

In July, Javno podjetje Komunala Izola, in cooperation with the Municipality of Izola, acquired the first underground waste collection facility in the area of the old city center in Izola, more precisely on Veliki trg. It is the second underground collection point in the municipality (the first one was established at the end of last year in Cankarjevo drevored), for the establishment of which money was obtained from the Waste design project, which is co-financed from the Interreg program. The cost of the establishment was 86,000 euros.

The collection facility is made of five fully buried containers with a volume of five and three cubic meters, intended for the disposal of separately collected fractions. Waste disposal at the underground collection point will be freely accessible for the time being, but later the containers will be equipped with an identification system for opening with a card and sensors to detect the level of filling. The technological upgrade will enable even more precise planning of waste removal from the city center.

The municipality says that in this way they will improve the conditions for the collection of municipal waste, and it will also be less disturbing for the surrounding area, as there will be less noise and removals. Above all, the removal of several smaller above-ground containers will contribute to greater look of the city. With the new system, they also want to increase the share of separately collected waste, which is currently 62%.

In the near future, as part of the reconstruction of the municipal port, a third advanced underground waste collection point will be established at the fishing pier. As early as this year, they will also start working on the installation of an underground waste collection point on Levstikova street, on Svetilnik beach.

Four project partners participate in the Waste design project, whose leading partner is the Municipality of Postojna. Komunala Izola will share the practice of smart underground ecological islands to the Municipality of Postojna, the practice of the Center of Useful Objects (CUP) to neighboring Italy, where partner Isontina Ambiente will then establish a related center, and in cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture in Venice IUAV, who will then from recycled building material create urban equipment.
