The final conference of the ECO-SMART project - Ecosystem services market for an Advanced Area Protection Policy NATURA 2000 funded under the Interreg V-A Cooperation Program will take place on 07.06.2022 in the Val Stagnon Nature Reserve area in Koper Italy-Slovenia 2014-2020.

The project has set itself the goal of mitigating the negative effects that put biodiversity at risk in Natura 2000 areas of cross-border regions, through the improvement of climate change monitoring systems, studying and planning appropriate adaptation measures to climate change.

The general objective of the project was to assess and test at an interregional level, through the pilot application of Payment models for Ecosystem Services, the economic feasibility of biodiversity conservation actions in coastal areas of the Natura 2000 network threatened by climate change.

To this end, procedures have been prepared to identify and assess the vulnerability of ecosystem services in the pilot sites, three adaptation plans made sustainable through the Payment models for Ecosystem Services and a harmonized procedure to be able to apply the methodology developed by the project.

The activities were carried out in the six pilot sites of the Natura 2000 Network in Italy and Slovenia: upper lagoon of Venice, lagoon of Caorle - mouth of the Tagliamento, mouth of the Tagliamento, the old valley - Zumelle - valleys of Bibione, Cavana di Monfalcone and Riserva Natural Val Stagnon in Koper.
