CULTURAL AND NATURAL HERITAGE AS POTENTIALS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE TOURISM: THE VISOKO MANSION (MerlinCV)

News

In the embrace of the Škofja Loka hills in the Poljane valley and the surrounding hills and forests the Visoko mansion is located.
The 17th-century manor house and its former owners, the Kalan family, were the source of inspiration in writing the historical novel Visoška kronika, by one of the Slovene writer, Ivan Tavčar. Later, in 1893, the writer and his wife purchased the property and used it for their annual residence.
The estate is formed by a former residential building, now used for permanent exhibitions and as a wedding hall. At the location is also an economic building with a typical hayrack – a double hayrack – and a chapel with a family tomb. In the vicinity, a bronze statue of the writer is set up, looking towards his birthplace – Poljane.
The municipality of Gorenje vas – Poljane is a sole proprietor. They began with slow and steady investment since 2012; a room for exhibitions was arranged and renovated, the wedding hall was restored, the old bourgeois kitchen was renovated, they fixed the access to the tomb etc. At the end of August 2017, the homestead in Visoko pri Poljanah was designated as a cultural monument of national importance.
Recently they opened a café and confectionery, yet another reason to visit this long dormant pearl of Slovenian cultural heritage.
