THE CASTLE OF COLLOREDO DI MONTE ALBANO (MerlinCV)

News

Re-built in the 16th century just as a “scenery element”, the castle has been defined as “the manor of writers and storytellers”. There lived and created their works of art Ermes da Colloredo (a 17th century poet), the great writer Ippolito Nievo (who wrote here its novel “Confessions of an Italian” during the 19th century) and finally the writer and traveller Stanislao Nievo.
The origins of the Castle dates back to the 14th century: since its very beginnings it was a manor built for defensive purposes as a permanent and safe residence set in the heart of the feud. After the end of the feudal warfare, which lasted throughout the 16th century, the landlords committed to decorate the old mansion according to the Renaissance elegance and splendour. To this period dates back the decorations of Giovanni da Udine, a pupil of Rafaello’s, who arranged the famous “studiolo” (small study room) of the Castle, of which are nowadays visible some interesting fragments with stuccoworks and zoo-anthropomorphic paintings.
Before the 1976 earthquake the Castle consisted of a central building, three towers and two wings. A triple boundary wall with an elliptical perimeter is still noticeable.
Today, waiting for the complete reconstruction, the clock tower and the west wing can be seen, where the Community Collinare del Friuli is located. Comunità Collinare del Friuli participates as a partner in the MerlinCV project (Interreg VA Italy Slovenia 2014-2020) that will valorize the excellence in tourism.
