Cross-border cycling event within the GeoKarst project - an overture to the participation in the Cross-border Geopark of the Karst

Saturday's geologically-oriented cycling tour is one of the first events that we will organize at the cross-border level and which will become more often with the establishment and functioning of the Cross-border geopark of the Classical Karst.

The cross-border event was one of three cycling events organized as part of the Italian scientific festival "Settimana del Pianeta Terra" (Week of Planet Earth) within the GeoKarst project, co-financed by the Interreg VA Italy-Slovenia Cooperation Program with the aid of the European Regional Development Fund.

The participants of the cycling tour had the opportunity to get to know a part of the Karst on Saturday, October 9, 2021, when we went with cycling tour guides Bike Slovenija and Estplore through the Living Museum of the Karst and the Glinščica Valley, one of the famous geosites of the Karst.

Let us remind you that the geopark is a geographically rounded area - the area of the Karst plateau. Karst with a capital letter, as the name for the karst landscape has spread all over the world, so we can say that the Karst was "born" here and that is why we also call it Classical Karst. The Karst plateau is spread in Slovenia and Italy, so we are talking about a cross-border geopark that connects 12 municipalities on the Italian side of the Karst and 5 municipalities on the Slovenian side of the Karst. As part of the GeoKarst project, we will prepare the bases for positioning our Karst at global level. In order for the cross-border geopark to contribute to the sustainable development of the area, we will apply for its inclusion in the UNESCO Global Network of Geoparks.
